Beyond the Basics

Overview

Once your community has decided to develop or update its hazard mitigation plan, the first task is to determine the overall scope of the planning project. Task 1 describes how to determine the planning area and the participating jurisdictions, as well as who will lead the plan and the resources needed to support the planning process. Your community can develop its own single jurisdiction plan or work with neighboring jurisdictions on a multi-jurisdictional plan. Based on our research, some of the strongest plans included:

A map showing the boundaries of the jurisdiction(s) covered by the plan
A list of participating jurisdictions and whether or not they participated in previous versions of the plan
A list of the agencies and persons who led the planning process

Each of these elements should be included in your community plan.
